Varicose Veins Develop Due to Many Factors

Varicose Veins Develop Due to Many Factors

If you search for information on varicose veins, you are probably familiar with the symptoms: enlarged, dark veins that push up through the skin on the surface of the legs. The annoying protrusion can itch, be painful, swell, scar the skin, and not heal as quickly as normal. Scratching can also cause open sores. The legs feel heavy, and the ankles can become swollen. These are just a few of the problems caused by varicose veins.

You know that you have them, but now you probably want to know why you got them in the first place. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to that question. Experts tell us that the cause of varicose veins is due to many factors, some of which seem related, and other that do not.  The question of who develops varicose veins more is easier to answer. This is because women make up the majority of people who suffer from varicose veins. Some experts suggest that women are genetically predisposed to having a higher risk of varicose veins.

Your family medical history is perhaps one of the leading factors that cause varicose veins. If one of your parents suffered from them, your risk of developing varicose veins is very high. Additional issues factor in as causes of varicose veins, such as pregnancy, obesity, menopause, aging, prolonged standing, leg injury and abdominal straining. All of these factors and conditions contribute to the causes of varicose veins. It is interesting to note that no factor alone seems to predict varicose vein development. Rather it is usually a combination of two or more of the aforementioned factors that are to blame.

At the very basic level, valves malfunction inside the vein, and stop doing their job of directing the flow of blood back toward the heart. When venal valves stop operating properly, the blood cannot move foward through the track of veins, and will pool behind and around the area with the faulty valves. The vein is weakened and enlarges to accomodate the increasing pool of blood. This is why the vein is pushing up through the surface of the skin. As the vein enlarges, the valves are damaged even more, causing more enlargement of the vein. It’s a never ending cycle.

While it could be any combination of things that caused your varicose vein condition, their appearance on your body and the complications for you are real. Whatever the genetic and hereditary factors, you probably just want to know what you can do to deal with them. The treatments available are as numerous as the causes of varicose veins. Treatment options will depends on the degree of severity of your varicose veins, and on the approach used most by your doctor. Treatment includes a wide range of options, from surgery to support type stockings. Since the blood is actually pooling and backing up in the enlarged veins, raising and keeping your feet above your heart helps. This forces the blood to flow out of the legs which gives the veins some relief from the pressure.
